Dixon Advisory Owls First Grade v Gungahlin Match Report 24.07.10
The Uni North Owls travelled to Nicholls for the return bout against the John I Dent Cup front runners the Gungahlin Eagles.  The wind was only slight and the sun was shining a perfect day for rugby.  The Owls were keen to do well after a disappointing outing against Queanbeyan in the last round.

In my match report I have as a matter of principle always stayed away from commenting on the refereeing and against my better judgment will continue to do so today.

The Owls had hoped to welcome back Michael Breen to the top grade but this was to be thwarted in the warm up with Breen succumbing to a hamstring twinge.  Coach Fahey had to do some last minute reshuffling.

The first half was pretty evenly contested with both teams very willing in both defence and attack.  The Owls were enterprising at times but again we were our own worst enemies with some poor options and missed tackles. New winger Steve Brandon had his best game for the club since joining the club. He scored a very nice try late in the first half to keep the Owls in the hunt. Gungahlin went to the oranges ahead 22-7.

The second half saw the Owls produce in patches some of our best rugby for the season.  We tackled well. Our counter rucking which has become a feature of our play this season was again very successful.  We ran the ball strongly.  If only we could sustain this for a full 80 minutes.  Our strong play had Gungahlin on the back foot but again we were our own worst enemies by making silly mistakes at crucial time that presented opportunities that were easy to take.  We were rewarded with tries to Adam Coleman and Steve Brandon.  We showed we have what it takes to beat teams but seem unable to keep our heads. Gungahlin ran our winners 39 – 17.

The Players Player went to Afa Amosa who had his best game of the year so far. Amosa took the ball forward very strongly and dished out some punishment in defence.  His contribution was further acknowledged when he was awarded the three points.  Two points went to Gareth Bautz who had an excellent game and looks to have settled a little in the top grade. One point went to both Adam Coleman and Les Makin.  Coleman continues to improve in leaps and bounds and is a force to be reckoned with in the lineout.  Les Makin provides the team with much needed go forward and his work in the set pieces continues to improve.

Next week we welcome Tuggeranong to ANU North.  If we can string an 80 minute performance together we might give the Vikings a run for their money.
